Current situation on recycling beverage cartons

Traditional recycling bins, target at papers, plastics, metals and glass bottles, are located widely in Hong Kong. Beverage carton contains plastics and aluminum, it therefore cannot be put into the paper recycle bins directly. According to the Statistics Unit of Environmental Protection Department, 67 tonnes per day of Beverage Carton were disposed of at landfills in 2018. 43 tonnes per day were from the domestic source while the remaining 24 tonnes per day were from commercial and industrial sources. Beverage cartons can be transformed into useful materials by using different techniques. For instance, the recycled beverage carton can be turned to pulp by using hydraulic pulping. Recycled paper and hand towels are examples of products.

However, recycling beverage cartoons has yet to become popular and widespread in Hong Kong while some countries are doing very well in it. Thus, useful materials, the beverage cartons, are being treated as rubbish and sent to landfill. It eventually intensifies the waste problem and escalates the problem of landfill saturation.

Hence, BCSRP plans to set up 25 reverse vending machines, combines with the utilization of mobile apps and GIS, to foster a smart recycling network and promote the message for recycling beverage cartons.
